# MIS Intensive

> The MIS Intensive™ Certificate Program: a 12-month certificate program that takes a foot & ankle surgeon from a first cadaver lab to performing percutaneous minimally invasive surgery on their own patients. Taught by Dr. TJ Ahn, DPM, a board-certified podiatric surgeon and founder of the International MIFAS Cadaver Lab.

## What this is

Most foot & ankle surgeons were trained to fix bone with hardware. It isn't always necessary. Percutaneous correction works through a few millimeters, often with no implant at all, and fewer than 5% of surgeons can do it.

MIS Intensive teaches that skill as a system rather than a weekend workshop: a filmed curriculum of the 8 core procedures of MIFAS, private cadaver labs, weekly live case reviews with faculty, and a peer-reviewed certificate ladder.

## Who it is for

Practicing foot & ankle surgeons, DPM, DO, or MD. Office, hospital, or ASC. Orthopedic foot & ankle surgeons train in the labs alongside podiatric surgeons. Nobody has to leave the OR or drop insurance networks to train here.

Not for: doctors looking for a one-weekend credential, or anyone not currently operating on the foot & ankle.

## How the program is structured

- **Course.** The MIFAS Accelerator: all 8 core procedures filmed on real patients, plus a Master Class Vault of advanced MIS procedures.
- **Coaching.** Weekly live case reviews, typically Thursday evenings, always recorded, with direct faculty guidance.
- **Community.** A private network of practicing MIS surgeons with 2,000+ MIS cases discussed and archived.

Three levels, each ending in a practical cadaver exam judged by peers and instructors:

- **Level 1, the White Coat.** Foundations: hammertoes, lesser metatarsal osteotomies, soft tissue techniques.
- **Level 2, the Blue Coat.** Advanced: bunionectomies, hallux limitus and hallux rigidus corrections.
- **Level 3, the Grey Coat.** Instructor: from surgeon to teacher and leader of the MIS movement.

Coats are approved by peers and instructors, not handed out for attendance.

## Board pathway

MIS Intensive is one of the official ABMSP certification pathways. Joining makes a doctor a candidate for board certification by ABMSP, and completing the program fulfills nearly every board requirement except the doctor's own surgical cases. 100% pass rate to date.

Note on naming: MIS Intensive awards **certificates** of completion. "Certification" refers only to ABMSP board certification.

## Evidence base

Every procedure taught is a published procedure: hammertoe, lesser metatarsal osteotomy, Reverdin-Isham, Akin, tailor's bunion, plantar fasciotomy and more. Peer-reviewed studies cited on the page include a 2024 *Scientific Reports* meta-analysis of Reverdin-Isham across 643 feet, a 2025 Level I RCT in *Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery* showing 0% nonunion with MIS versus 13.6% open, and a 2025 *Medicina* meta-analysis showing a 95.4% pooled union rate for distal minimally invasive metatarsal osteotomies with no implants.

Board-certified podiatric surgeon in Glenview, Illinois. Founder of the International MIFAS Cadaver Lab, hosted and organized annually since 2018.
